What is Reiki?

In a world increasingly drawn to holistic healing and spiritual wellness, Reiki has emerged as both a gentle curiosity and a powerful practice. But what is Reiki exactly? At its core, Reiki is an energy healing technique that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. It involves the practitioner channeling universal life energy—often described as ki or chi—through their hands to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual healing.

The term Reiki comes from two Japanese words: rei, meaning “universal,” and ki, meaning “life energy.” Founded by Mikao Usui in 1922 after a spiritual experience on Mount Kurama, Reiki was initially intended as a path to enlightenment and self-discipline. Over time, it evolved into a hands-on healing modality that’s now practiced worldwide. Practitioners often place their hands lightly on or just above the head or body, allowing energy to flow to areas that need balance or relief. Sessions are typically calm and meditative, promoting deep relaxation akin to a waking dream state.

Unlike massage or acupuncture, Reiki doesn't manipulate the body physically or use tools. Instead, it operates on the premise that imbalances in one’s energy field can lead to mental or physical distress. Reiki aims to clear energetic blockages, restore harmony, and trigger the body’s natural healing processes. Some recipients report a warm sensation, tingling, or even emotional release during a session. Though scientific evidence is limited, studies suggest Reiki may help reduce anxiety, pain, and fatigue—especially when used as a complement to conventional care.

Critics sometimes dismiss Reiki as placebo or pseudoscience due to its metaphysical roots and lack of quantifiable outcomes. But its popularity persists, especially among those who believe in the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit. Hospitals, cancer centers, and wellness spas increasingly offer Reiki as part of integrative health programs—not to cure, but to comfort, soothe, and empower. Whether seen as sacred ritual or self-care strategy, Reiki taps into a universal human desire for peace, balance, and gentle touch in a turbulent world.
